A. C. Graham was a major scholar of pre-imperial philosophy, Mohist logic, the School of Names, the Zhuangzi, and Classical Chinese grammar. He combined rigorous linguistic analysis with an effort to place Chinese philosophy in the setting of modern philosophical argument.
His importance lies in refusing to reduce Chinese thought to vague Eastern wisdom. Instead, he analyzed concepts, forms of reasoning, linguistic structures, and argument in detail; scholars have regarded him as one of the twentieth century's foremost authorities on classical Chinese philosophy and grammar.
