Person, materials, and method

Scholarship in context.

Jean-Pierre Abel-Remusat's appointment to a chair devoted to Chinese and Inner Asian languages and literature in 1814 marked an important shift. European study of China was moving from missionaries, diplomats, and independent Orientalists toward a professional discipline housed in universities.

His lasting significance is therefore institutional as much as textual. The professional sinologist was expected to command primary languages, bibliography, historical context, and comparative Oriental philology rather than rely on travel accounts alone.
