Herbert A. Giles succeeded Wade at Cambridge, compiled a Chinese-English dictionary, wrote on literary history and Chinese culture for general readers, and refined the romanization system now known as Wade-Giles.
His work made Chinese materials easier to use in the English-speaking world and widened public access to Chinese literature, religion, and history. Some of his broad generalizations retained the typologies of late nineteenth-century Orientalism, so his practical contributions should be distinguished from their historical limitations.
