Philippe Couplet helped organize and publish a major 1687 Latin presentation of Confucius with other Jesuit translators. By introducing several central Confucian texts to European intellectual circles, the project contributed to Enlightenment-era interest in China.
The project did more than translate Confucius: it fashioned him as a moral philosopher intelligible to European readers. In doing so, it could understate the ritual, political, and historical settings of Confucian thought and reorganize them through Christian and classical European categories.
