Kristofer Schipper was one of the most transformative figures in modern Daoist studies. He not only read the Daoist Canon but also conducted fieldwork in Taiwan and elsewhere and formally received Daoist transmission.
His work recast Daoism from an abstract philosophy or folk superstition as a living religious system encompassing priests, ritual, temples, local communities, views of the body, and scriptures. He also participated in a major research project on the Daoist Canon, helping combine textual study with anthropological fieldwork.
