Person, materials, and method

Scholarship in context.

Paul Pelliot was renowned for his command of Chinese and several Central Asian languages and for his ability to identify difficult documents. His work encompassed Dunhuang manuscripts, Mongol history, exchanges between China and the West, the transmission of Buddhism, and historical bibliography.

His rapid assessment of fragmentary texts represents the high point of early twentieth-century multilingual Eurasian sinology. At the same time, his acquisition of manuscripts from Dunhuang entangles his scholarship with questions of cultural ownership and the ethics of collecting in the colonial era.
