Wm. Theodore de Bary studied Confucianism, Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, and East Asian intellectual history, and oversaw major English-language anthologies of primary sources from the Chinese tradition.
His central contribution was to present Confucianism as a changing intellectual tradition capable of self-criticism rather than a static feudal ideology. His work carried strong humanistic and normative concerns and at times gave greater weight to intellectual values than to social structure, yet its influence on the teaching of East Asian thought in the English-speaking world was pervasive.
