Arthur Waley translated a wide range of classical Chinese poetry, Confucian and Daoist texts, an abridged Journey to the West, and Japanese literature. Although he never traveled to China or Japan, he worked through self-directed study and collections at the British Museum and became an exceptionally influential literary translator.
Waley often made his translations work first as compelling English literature. That gave them unusual literary force, though it could make them less useful than more literal versions for linguistic study; above all, he brought Chinese poets, classics, and fiction to a broad English-reading public.
