David Hawkes was renowned for translating the Songs of Chu, Du Fu, and Dream of the Red Chamber. He translated the first eighty chapters of The Story of the Stone, and his manuscripts show how he handled verse, puns, forms of address, dialect, and cultural allusion.
Hawkes demonstrated that literary translation can itself be scholarship of the highest order. Beyond asking what a sentence means, he had to judge a character's tone, narrative rhythm, poetic form, and internal echoes within the novel.
