Person, materials, and method
Denis Twitchett's principal field was the political, fiscal, and administrative history of the Sui and Tang, and he was also one of the chief initiators and editors of The Cambridge History of China.
His influence came not only from individual monographs but from large collaborative projects that brought together scholars from different countries and specialties in a continuous history of China. This work helped establish stable divisions of scholarly labor, evidentiary standards, and patterns of international collaboration in English-language Chinese history.
