Person, materials, and method

Scholarship in context.

Henri Maspero worked across early Chinese history, Daoism, Chinese religion, Buddhism, mythology, and the history of science. He helped replace dismissive accounts of Daoism as superstition with the study of a complex tradition of texts, ritual, immortality, bodily practice, and historical organization.

Maspero died at Buchenwald in 1945. Later discoveries have revised some of his specific conclusions, but the questions he opened in the histories of Daoism and Chinese religion remain foundational.
