Person, materials, and method

Scholarship in context.

Beginning in 1954, the multivolume history of science and technology in China directed by Joseph Needham systematically examined Chinese mathematics, astronomy, medicine, machinery, agriculture, metallurgy, chemistry, navigation, and engineering. It challenged accounts that treated modern science simply as a product internal to European civilization.

The Needham Question asks why the scientific and industrial revolutions first took place in Europe despite traditional China's many scientific and technological achievements. It is not a problem with a settled answer, but a framework that has stimulated research in institutional, economic, intellectual, and global history.
