Martin Kern studies pre-imperial textual culture, the Classic of Poetry, the Songs of Chu, excavated Warring States bamboo manuscripts, relationships between writing and oral transmission, and the ways texts were produced and used within communities.
His work exemplifies a new philology in which ancient books are not assumed to have been fixed works from the outset, but may have taken shape gradually through separate units, performance traditions, scribal activity, and communities of interpretation.
