The Lu Clan is one of the hundreds of traditional Chinese clans, ranking 42nd in popularity, accounting for approximately 0.47% of the Han Chinese population in China.
Origins of the Lu Clan:
- The clan originated from the Jiang Clan, taking the name of a local district as its surname. During the Spring and Autumn period, a man named Gao from the state of Qi was granted the fief of Lu (located in present-day Changqing County, Shandong Province); his descendants adopted "Lu" as their surname.
- Some clans took the name of their respective states. According to "FengSu TongYi," the ancient state of LuZi gave rise to the Lu clan. As recorded in "TongZhi·ShiZuLue," the Lu clan also has the variant spelling "Lu," and is said to be descended from LuZi JiLi.
- During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, some Xianbei tribes adopted compound surnames, which were later simplified to "Lu." For example, the MoLu clan of the Northern Wei Dynasty changed its name to "Lu," and the TuFuLu clan also converted to "Lu."
