Origin of the Tian surname
The surname “Tian” originated during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, when the Tian clan was originally part of the Chen clan. For example, Tian Chengzi, a prominent minister of the State of Qi during the Spring and Autumn period, was also known as Chen Chengzi. Later, Tian He overthrew the rule of the Jiang clan, an event historically referred to as “the Tian clan replacing the Jiang clan in Qi.” Additionally, Tian Pian, a philosopher from the Warring States period, was also called Chen Pian. According to the “Records of the Grand Historian: The Family of Tian Wan” and the “New Book of Tang: Tables of Prime Ministers’ Lineages,” in the early Zhou dynasty, the marquis Hu Man was granted a fief in the State of Chen (located in present-day Huaiyang County, Henan Province). The tenth-generation descendant of Hu Man, Chen Ligan, had a son named Wan, with the courtesy name Jingzhong. When the crown prince was killed by Duke Xuan of Chen, Jingzhong, fearing for his own safety, fled to the State of Qi, adopted the surname Tian, and thus changed his name to Tian.
