Origin of the Xu Family Name
The name “Xu” originates from the Feng family. During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a state named Xugou (located in the northwest of present-day Dongping County, Shandong Province), which was descended from the legendary figure Taihao Fuxi. The people of this state were called the Xugou people, and later their surname was changed to Xu. The name also originated from the Mi family. In the Shang dynasty, there was a small state called Mixu (in the west of present-day Lingtai County, Gansu Province); the descendants of its ruler adopted the character “Xu” from the state name as their surname. Additionally, the name was sometimes derived from place names. During the Spring and Autumn period, there was an ancient town named Xu in the state of Wei (in the southeast of present-day Huaxian County, Henan Province); its inhabitants also adopted the town name as their surname. The family’s hall name is “Luliang Hall”: During the Han dynasty, there was a noble named Xu Wufeng who was granted the title of Marquis of Luliang, and this title was hereditary for four generations.
