Danyang Commandery: Danyang, also known as Runzhou or Danyang Commandery, is an ancient place name in China, and the specific location it referred to has changed over time. During the Pre-Qin period, there were three places named Danyang, but it generally referred to Yuzhang Commandery (present-day Nanchang, Jiangxi). After the establishment of the commandery and county system during the Han Dynasty, many more commanderies and counties were named Danyang. Danyang Commandery was first established in the second year of Yuanshou during the Western Han Dynasty (Gengshen, 121 BCE) and was reorganized from the former Yuzhang Commandery. Its administrative center was Wanning (present-day Xuancheng, Anhui), governing seventeen counties. Its territory included the area south of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province, the Damao Mountains in Jiangsu Province, and the area west of the Tianmu Mountain Range in Zhejiang Province, as well as the Wuqiang River, a tributary of the Xin'an River in Zhejiang Province. During the Three Kingdoms period, the state of Sun Wu moved its capital to Jiankang (present-day Nanjing, Jiangsu), and the jurisdiction of Danyang Commandery was reduced accordingly. In the Later Wei period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, another Danyang Commandery was established in the northeast of Xiangcheng County, Henan Province. After the Sui Dynasty conquered the Southern Chen Dynasty, the commandery was abolished; however, Emperor Yang of Sui later re-established Runzhou with its capital in Yanling (present-day Changzhou, Jiangsu), and later designated Jiangzhou (present-day Nanjing, Jiangsu) as Danyang Commandery. During the Tang Dynasty, the capital was moved to Dantu (present-day Zhenjiang, Jiangsu). During the Zhenghe period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1111–1118 BCE), it was promoted to Zhenjiang Prefecture. Additionally, the ancient state of Chu was originally located in what is now Zigui, Hubei; when King Wen of Chu moved east to present-day Zhijiang, Hubei, he still called that area Danyang. The Danyang County during the Qin Dynasty, also known as Danyang County, was located in what is now Dangtu County, Anhui Province and was incorporated into Dangtu County during the Tang Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republic of China, the modern-day Danyang was merely a county-level city, located near present-day Liyang City, Jiangsu Province, adjacent to the Yangtze River and under the jurisdiction of Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province. The Zhuan Sun clan's ancestral home, Danyang, is now Xuancheng, Anhui Province.
Origin of the Zhuan Sun Genealogy
The Zhuan Sun surname originates from:
- The Gui surname, originating from the royal family of the state of Chen during the Spring and Autumn period, with the surname being derived from the name of an ancestor.
- The Gaoyang surname, originating from descendants of Emperor Zhuanxu from ancient times, with the surname being derived from the ancestral title.
- The Ji surname, originating from Zhuan Sun Shi, a member of the royal family of the state of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period, with the surname being derived from the name of an ancestor.
Ancestor of the Surname: Zhuanxu, Zhuan Sun, Zhuan Sun Shi (son Zhang). According to records in "Fengsu Tong" and "Shangyou Lu," the Zhuan Sun clan was part of the royal family of the state of Chen during the Spring and Autumn period. It is believed that Zhuan Sun, a descendant of the ancient sage Emperor Shun of the Gui surname, served as an official in the state of Jin. His descendants adopted his father's title as their surname, thus forming the Zhuan Sun clan. The state of Chen during the Spring and Autumn period was located in the area of Huaiyang, Henan Province, which is considered the ancestral home of the Zhuan Sun clan. Although Zhuan Sun had no blood relation to Emperor Zhuanxu of the Gaoyang surname from more than 4000 years ago, the Zhuan Sun surname has a history of only about 2600 years. The prominent clan members lived in Danyang Commandery (present-day Xuancheng, Anhui Province).
Migration and Distribution: Although the Zhuan Sun clan is a very ancient Han Chinese surname, its total population does not rank among the top 300 in mainland China or Taiwan Province. In the Song Dynasty's version of the "Hundred Family Surnames," it was ranked 445th. The prominent clan members originated from Danyang Commandery. According to "Tongzhi·Shizu Lue," the Zhuan Sun clan descended from a prince of Chen. The clan's name originated from Prince Zhuan Sun of Chen. There were two versions of this origin: one stating that the Zhuan Sun clan came from Chen and the other that they came from Lu. The latter version seems more credible. The "Zuo Zhuan" records that in the 22nd year of Duke Zhuang of Lu (672 BCE), Prince Wan of Chen and Zhuan Sun fled to Qi; Zhuan Sun later returned to Lu. This indicates a conflict for the throne in Chen during the Spring and Autumn period, leading to their exile. Prince Wan (styled Jingzhong) was the son of Duke Li of Chen and later became the ancestor of the Tian family, which ruled Qi. Another prince, Zhuan Sun, fled from Qi to Lu and served as an official there, and his descendants adopted the surname Zhuan Sun. Qian Mu, in "Xianqin Zhuzi Xiniangkao Bian
