Person, materials, and method
Bernhard Karlgren applied European historical linguistics to Chinese. He drew on dialect surveys, rhyme books, fanqie spellings, poetic rhymes, and Sino-Xenic readings in languages such as Japanese and Vietnamese to reconstruct earlier stages of Chinese pronunciation.
Later scholars substantially revised or replaced his particular reconstructions, but he changed the nature of the problem. Earlier Chinese phonology could now be approached through comparative linguistics as a testable historical model, making his work foundational to the modern field.
